What makes a local hero?

September 6, 2017

Andy Bord, Flood Re’s CEO and one of the judges of Flood Re’s Local Heroes initiative shares his views on what makes a winning local hero entry.

Nominations from all over the country are being submitted to our Local Heroes initiative as we search for those who have shown leadership and resilience around their flood relief efforts.

I am looking for an individual or a group that has been the true pillar of strength for flood action, made a real difference on the ground and demonstrated truly heroic attributes.

Your local heroes may have supported their communicates with large scale projects like campaigning for improved flood defences or have done some of the smaller, but still vitally important, things such as making tea rounds for neighbours in their time of need. I want to hear about any work whether big or small!

To help those thinking about putting forward an individual or group for recognition and for their chance to win £10,000 for a local cause of their choice, I wanted to share my thoughts on what I, as a judge, am looking for in a winning local hero:

  • How has the nominee’s actions and work benefited the local community?
  • Have the activities of the nominee had a lasting impact on their community?
  • What has been the personal cost by the nominee to help their community?
  • Has the nominee communicated effectively and with passion to or on behalf of their community?

Nominations are open until Monday 18th September 2017 and we look forward to reviewing all of the community stories and awarding the chosen flooding Local Hero with £10,000!
