Data Developer
Purpose
We are seeking a skilled Data Developer with hands-on experience in SQL Code, Azure Data Factory, Python, Azure DevOps and Power Apps to join our dynamic data team. The ideal candidate will be responsible for designing, developing, and maintaining robust data solutions, including ETL pipelines, reverse engineering , database systems, optimisation and data integration processes. This role requires a strong understanding of SQL and/or Python cloud-based data engineering tools, and scripting languages to support our data-driven decision-making processes. The successful candidate will play a key role in supporting IFRS17 reporting, data integration and finance data initiatives, ensuring high quality, reliable and compliant data solutions across the organisation. The person will be a member of the company wide Data Practice, secure development methodologies and must Follow data management best practices, is aware of regulations, policies, and standards governing the data they interact with.
Key Responsibilities
1. Database Development and Optimisation:
- Design, develop, and maintain SQL databases, tables, views, stored procedures, and functions.
- Optimise SQL queries ,reverse engineering of existing platforms and database performance for large-scale datasets
- Troubleshoot and resolve database-related issues.
2. ETL Development with Azure Data Factory:
- Design and implement ETL pipelines using Azure Data Factory to integrate data from multiple sources.
- Configure and manage ADF pipelines, data flows, and linked services.
- Monitor and troubleshoot ADF pipelines to ensure data accuracy and reliability.
3. Data Integration and Transformation:
- Develop Python scripts for data extraction, transformation, and loading (ETL) processes.
- Integrate data from various sources (e.g., APIs, flat files, databases) into centralised data warehouses.
- Experience of integrating Python and SQL code, MS fabric with a view to simplifying support and removing complexity
- Implement data validation and cleansing processes to ensure data quality.
4. Collaboration and Support:
- Work closely with data analysts, data scientists, finance accountant and business stakeholders to understand data requirements and deliver solutions.
- Provide technical support and guidance to team members on SQL, ADF, and Python-related tasks.
- Document technical processes, workflows, and best practices.
5. Cloud Data Solutions:
- Leverage Azure cloud services (e.g., Azure SQL Database, Azure Blob Storage, Azure Data Factory, MS Fabric) to build scalable data solutions.
- Implement data security and compliance measures in cloud environments.
6. Automation and Innovation:
- Automate repetitive tasks using Python scripts and ADF pipelines.
- Stay updated with emerging technologies and tools in data engineering and propose innovative solutions.
7. Azure DevOps Integration:
- Use Azure DevOps for CI/CD pipelines to automate deployment and testing of data solutions.
- Manage version control, build pipelines, and release management for database and ETL projects
- An understanding of quality control procedures (unit tests system tests) in working alongside existing test team
8. Power Apps Development:
- Develop and maintain Power Apps for business process automation and data visualisation.
- Integrate Power Apps with backend databases and APIs to create user-friendly interfaces.
Risk Responsibilities
As an employee act as First Line of Defence for Flood Re, to identify and manage risks, generate and review risk information, and to take appropriate actions to maintain the risk exposure within appetite. Risks should be reported to ExCo and the Risk Function
Information Security Responsibilities
As a member of Flood Re, you are expected to foster a security-aware culture through your own actions and behaviour by exercising good judgment, being aware of Information Security risks, compliant with all policies (including but not limited to fair usage and information security), diligent in the completion of Information Security training, mindful of any suspicious activity and proactive in your response to it and immediate reporting of any concerns or issues to the Flood Re IT / infosec team.
Knowledge and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Data Science, or a related field.
- Knowledge of insurance financial processes and IFRS 17 reporting requirements is advantageous.
- Experience supporting actuarial, finance, or regulatory reporting data solutions is advantageous.
- 3+ years of experience as an SQL Developer or in a similar role.
- Hands-on experience with Azure Data Factory for building and managing ETL pipelines.
- Proficiency in Python for data manipulation, automation, and scripting
- Strong knowledge of relational databases (e.g., SQL Server, PostgreSQL, MySQL) and database design principles.
- Experience with cloud platforms, preferably Microsoft Azure/MS Fabric
- Familiarity with data warehousing concepts and tools (e.g., Azure Synapse, Snowflake) is a plus.
Technical Skills:
- Advanced SQL coding (queries, stored procedures, functions, triggers).
- ETL development using Azure Data Factory (ADF)
- Python programming for data processing and automation.
- Knowledge of version control systems (e.g., Git)
- Familiarity with data visualisation tools (e.g., Power BI) is a plus.

Regulatory Responsibilities
As Flood Re is dual regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority and the Prudential Regulation Authority, you will be expected to abide by the required regulatory obligations placed on you, as required, depending on your role.
This role is a Conduct Rules role, and Flood Re has designated this role as one that requires involvement in certain aspects of Flood Re’s regulated activities. This role is subject to the First Tier Conduct Rules detailed below.
