Profile: Harriet Boughton

September 9, 2016

Please meet another of our keen cyclists, Harriet Boughton, General Counsel at Flood Re. Harriet is really looking forward to connecting with the flood affected communities firsthand and hearing about the experiences they have had.

Name: Harriet Boughton

Age: Younger than Andrew, older than Chris…

What spurred you on to put your best foot forward and cycle the #FloodReTour Land’s End to John O’Groats bike ride?

What’s not to like? It’s such a privilege to combine a team-based, physical challenge with a unique cause. We’ll learn more about the issues faced by those most at risk of flooding, and see how the scheme has already helped some of them, whilst raising the profile of Flood Re. All very inspiring.

How has the training been going?

I’ve tried to cycle to work twice a week and do a longer ride on the weekend. I definitely need to do more. Plan B is carb-loading.

What is your longest training ride?

Before we came up with this idea, I did the Dunwich Dynamo (120 miles through the night) with friends, which was really fun. Otherwise, 80 miles, slow and on the flat…

Any embarrassing or proud moments during training?

I did have a near-miss unclipping my feet at some traffic lights on a busy high street, on a Saturday.

What are you most looking forward to on the tour?

A strong south-westerly wind.

What are you least looking forward to on the tour?

Hills and any talk about chamois cream or its equivalent.

Have you ever done anything like this before?

No. I cycled quite a bit in India, but never for so far each day.

One thing that you won’t be without during the cycle ride e.g. memento (excluding the obvious water etc)

My gel bicycle seat.

Do you have a message for the flood affected communities you are going to visit en route?

That we care, want to learn more and hope that by raising the profile of Flood Re, we can all use the support to enable good things to happen.
